During January 2003 StarTek of Denver, Colorado, an international communications company, decided to locate their Canadian Call Centre in Regina, on the third floor of the Downtown Cornwall Centre. Together with IA of Denver, we were commissioned to commence design work during early February 2003 for this new tenant.
At the same time, Graham Design Builders Ltd., commissioned SEPW Architecture Inc. to design and oversee complementing landlord work at the Cornwall Centre for Cadillac Fairview, the building owners.
Selective demolition of the entire third floor of the Cornwall Centre commenced immediately, during which time designs for the new Call Centre were developed and finalized. Working drawings commenced before the end of February 2003. The schedule demanded that the renovated premises would be occupied by the end of April 2003, with staff training program commencing four weeks prior by the use of ‘swing space’. All schedule requirements were met.
The Call centre accommodates 600 persons at any one time, with three shifts daily. Facility improvements consist of new passenger elevators (2), incorporation of new windows, entry and reception, visitor meeting rooms, interview rooms, administrative areas/offices, the accommodation of 600 + computer stations, climate controlled main computer room, staff rooms, food preparation and cafeteria area.
The design results in a comfortable yet dynamic and interesting work space with a centrally located lounge/cafeteria area, naturally lit by a large, existing skylight, which by careful and thoughtful design provides direct and borrowed natural light to the centre of this large facility.
