During 1999, our firm was selected through competition to provide architectural and engineering services to add one floor to the top of the existing four-storey Education Building.
Following a careful investigation of the building structure and systems, we ascertained that with some additional mechanical work, the existing building was capable of supporting a further one and a half floors, thereby increasing the area from 4,100m2 to 6,150m2 - a considerable benefit to the University and the area deficiencies they face.
Careful architectural treatment has been necessary to ensure that the scale and massing of the building continue to be aesthetically pleasing, even though a considerable addition has been placed over the original. Precast concrete materials of similar colour and texture have been used in the new upper external walls, ensuring that the general appearance and design appears entirely original. |
