Resulting from major concerns arising out of a 1990 structural engineering study of their 1911 building, the First Baptist Church commissioned us to carry out a further major study of their existing building and future facility requirements.
The results of this study provided greater reason for concern regarding the condition of the building fabric, mechanical and electrical systems and general safety of the building occupants. Further, the results of research related to options of accommodation, and the benefits and costs of alternatives, resulted in a clear decision that the Church would stay at its original location, within a completely restored building.
This decision ensured the preservation of one of Regina’s finest “Greek Revival” styled buildings and will help preserve the important heritage streetscape that bounds Victoria Park to the south.
Preliminary redesign work commenced during January 1991 with detailed redesign and planning commencing during April 1991. Selective demolition and reconstruction commenced July 1991 with phased reconstruction being completed April 30, 1992.
Major restoration work to ensure at least 50 years of reliable building performance included; replacement of main structural elements of the roof and supports, complete replanning of the basement to accommodate a flexible program of requirements, new sanctuary ceiling and dome, new choir and organ area/facades, replanned administrative areas, modified main entrance and stair wells, new windows and restoration of original stained glass, new doors and frames, new interiors and finished, replacement of mechanical and electrical systems and a complete exterior restoration and cleaning. The building now complies with current building and fire codes. |
