Project Updates

Place Riel
The construction of the $28M (estimated) Renovation and Expansion to Place Riel has now surpassed the halfway point.  The project remains on time and on budget, despite Saskatoon’s record spring rainfall and recent expansion of the project’s scope.

Phase 1, which included the completion of the Campus Computer Store and The Cove, was completed and opened to the public earlier this year.  Phase 2 is currently nearing completion.

Phase 2, which will begin to reveal itself in September starting with the completion of new offices for Global Commons and then followed by the opening of additional Lower Level food vendors later in the fall.

The remainder of the project – which includes a new Lower Level Food Court, main floor Concourse/USC Executive Chamber/Student Info Desk and USSU Reception, and second floor USSU office area and Campus Club space - is slated for substantial completion in late January 2011.

The fit up of the third and fourth floors of the expansion for new Student Health and Counseling space is eventually anticipated, and preferred to follow in close succession, however, exactly when will depend on funding arrangements being finalized.

When fully completed, the project will provide enhanced pedestrian crosswalks to the bus mall adjacent Campus Drive, the re-roofing and enhancement of the courtyard between the Murray Library and Place Riel, an enhanced storm water drainage system in Lower Place Riel and a new roof over the Murray Building’s Art and Art History Studios.

The project is also on track to be LEED Certified.   Of note is that from construction start to May 2010 approximately 88% of building material waste has been diverted from landfill.

Best Western Blairmore, West Saskatoon
SEPW is pleased to note that the newest addition to the expanding Blairmore Suburban Centre in West Saskatoon, the new Best Western Blairmore, will be ready for its first guests in the fall of this year.

Sheraton Cavalier Expansion
The conversion of The Cavalier Towers Apartments to additional suites for Saskatoon’s Sheraton Cavalier is underway.  This project converts approximately 46 adjacent and existing apartments into approximately 56 new upscale hotel suites.  Substantial completion is estimated for December 2010.

RBC
Due to the growing populations of both Saskatoon and Regina, SEPW is pleased to announce our involvement in two new RBC branches, one at the corner of Slimmon Road and Herold Road within the Lakewood Suburban Centre in East Saskatoon and the other on Rochdale Boulevard, in conjunction with re-development of the Rochdale Crossing Mall in Regina.

Feedwater
The construction of the expansion to the University of Saskatchewan’s Heating Plant to accommodate the Boiler’s Feedwater Treatment System is underway.  The completion of this project will provide the capacity for the University of Saskatchewan to efficiently return and re-use the condensate generated by the steam heating system for the expanding network of campus buildings.  SEPW is acting as the architectural consultant for this important project.

YMCA
Renovations are now underway in the YMCA for upgrades to the lobby, cafeteria and change rooms.

RCMP Centennial Building Renovations
Work has been completed for the renovation and recapitalization of the former RCMP Museum, now known as the Centennial Building.  This facility houses a new 225 seat auditorium, Driver and scenario simulation training, classroom and new General Mess.

Prince Albert North District Building - RCMP
Planning and design is currently underway for the recapitalization and renovations of the North District Building to serve a changing program and to coincide with work be completed for a new Prince Albert Detachment building.  Work includes re-organization of the interior spaces and replacement of finishes; envelope upgrades and new mechanical and electrical systems that will improve the comfort and energy efficiency of this building, which was constructed in the 1970s.

Kipling School
Consultation and planning work has commenced on the master planning study and phased renovation work to this school complex.  It is anticipated that this work will be completed over a period of years as funding becomes available.
